4th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – C

Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ

and the love of God

and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit

be with you all.   [2 Cor. 13: 13)

Introduction  and  Litany of Praise

A       Like so many prophets before him, Jesus was rejected by his own people. They couldn’t accept the message that God had for them.

Let us reflect on the fact that sometimes we reject the message and the messengers God sends to us.   (pause)

Let us turn to Christ, the messenger of God’s truth, love and mercy.

Lord Jesus, you came to heal the brokenhearted.

Lord, have mercy.

You came to call sinners to repentance.

Christ, have mercy.

You plead for us at the right hand of the Father.

Lord, have mercy.

B       God speaks to us in different ways –  in the Scriptures and in the events of daily life.  Have we opened our hearts to hear him?

Let us now examine ourselves.   (pause)

Lord, today the Scripture is fulfilled in our hearing:

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, you speak to us also through the prophets of today:

Christ, have mercy.

Lord, you speak to us through our daily encounters

especially with those in need of help.

Lord, have mercy.

Opening Prayer

A      God of salvation,

in your Prophet, Jesus the Christ,

you announce freedom

and summon us to conversion.

Enlighten us to see the beauty of the gospel

and strengthen us to embrace its demands.

Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God for ever and ever.  AMEN.

B       God of the prophets,

your love reaches far beyond the boundaries of race or religion.

Redeemed by a love so patient and kind,

may we offer that same love to others

and so proclaim your name to the world

by the witness of our lives.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God for ever and ever.  AMEN.

GENERAL   INTERCESSIONS

P       Let us pray for an open heart, that we may discern the will of the Lord in the challenges that we meet each day.

CM      Our response is:       Lord, sustain us in your love.

Please repeat:

  1. That those who serve the Church may always stand up for the Gospel values and never be discouraged by opposition or lack of response.

We pray:

  • That God’s Word may be the foundation and inspiration of the needed renewal of our values as a people.

We pray:

3   For all of us; that we may listen carefully to the voice of the prophets in our midst.  We pray:

4   For those whose love is unsung:   parents of ‘special’ children;  those who care for aged parents or persons who are gravely ill.

We pray:

[The Presider may add a Petition that is local / relevant]

P       Lord, send your Spirit to make us strong in faith and active in good works, because alone and unaided we cannot hope to please you.

We make our prayer through Christ our Lord.  AMEN.

Prayer over the Gifts

Generous God,

in these signs of bread and wine

we bring to you the fruits of our labor.

May your Son Jesus,

the son of Joseph the carpenter,

help us to bear the burden of our daily work

and to seek your will in all we do.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.  AMEN.

Invitation to the Lord’s Prayer

A       That the Kingdom of God may be clearly seen among us….

let us pray / sing:

B       We are bound together by the gift of God’s love.

We acknowledge this now as we pray together:

Deliver us Lord

Deliver us, Lord, from every evil

and grant to us the peace

that comes from a Christ-like love;

a love that is patient and kind and rejoices in the truth;

a love that gives us hope…

as we wait for the final coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, here inside the church it is easy to give a sign of peace,

but in the real world it is often very difficult.

We pause for a moment to see if maybe there is someone

who, at this moment, is waiting for a sign of peace from us.

                                                                                                                 (pause)

Lord, help us to give this sign of peace,

so that we may enjoy the peace and unity of your kingdom

where you live for ever and ever.

Exchange of Peace

Real love brings peace to the world.

We show love for one another by offering a sign of Christ’s peace.

Invitation to Communion

A      This is Jesus, the living Word of the Father,

whose voice could not be silenced even in death.

Blessed are we to be invited to hear his word

and eat at his table.

B      This is the Lord Jesus,

God’s sacrament of love.

Blessed are we who are invited to receive him.

Prayer after Communion

Loving God,

you have spoken to us today

the powerful word of Jesus your Son.

Give us his spirit and courage;

raise up prophets from our midst

to remind us how to follow him,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

God for ever and ever.  AMEN

Blessing

May your love not be jealous…  but be patient and kind.    AMEN

May your love always be ready to trust, to hope

and to endure whatever comes.     AMEN

May your faith, hope and love never come to an end.     AMEN

And may the blessing of God,

the Father,  +  and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

come down upon you and remain with you for ever.   AMEN.
