The Family assigned to light the ADVENT CANDLES assembles in the front seat, ‘Candle’ Side.The 2 candles that were lighted the previous Sundays are lit before the Procession begins. The Cantor sings/recites the Verse:The Choir leads the Assembly in singing / reciting the Response
When the Ministers are ready to begin the Procession the CM says: Please STAND.

 Lighting of Candles

Assigned family ascends steps & lights the 3rd Candle on the ADVENT WREATH While they do this the Presider says slowly: 

P As we light the candles of our Advent wreath,let us pray that God’s radiant splendor will bring the light of hopeto those whose lives are darkened by oppression and war. May it also enlighten our eyes to behold Christ in others.

The family members now return to their seat.
The Presider may proceed to the Chair.

A Penitential Rite [Optional]
    Like the people in today’s Gospel, are we filled with expectation for the coming of the Messiah?Do we prepare for the Lord with eager longing? (pause)

Lord, you are in our midst as a mighty Savior:Lord, have mercy.

Lord, your peace stands guard over our hearts and minds:Christ, have mercy.

Lord, you are the Messiah who gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit:Lord, have mercy.

B Litany of Praise [Optional]
Today the Church encourages us to rejoice as the Feast of our Salvation draws near – a rejoicing which must overflow to those with whom we live and work. In joyful expectation then, let us call out to the Christ, who is our salvation. [Pause]

You came to bring good news to the poor and healing to the brokenhearted;Lord, come and save us.    Lord, come and save us.

Opening Prayer

Almighty God,you sent your Son into a worldwhere the wheat must be winnowed from the chaffand where evil clings even to what is good.
Let the fire of your Spiritpurge us of greed and deceit,so that, purified, we may find our peace in youand you may delight in us.
Grant this through him whose coming is certain, your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,God for ever and ever. AMEN.


O God, fountain of life and rejoicing,renew us in your loveand baptize us with the fire of your Holy Spirit,that we may proclaim to all peoplethe good news of your presence in our midst.
May we delight to share with them your peace, which surpasses all understanding.

P Following the advice of St. Paul, let us present our requests to God in prayer and supplication, and we say:

CM Come, Lord, do not delay.    

Please repeat:
1 For the Church; (pause)  that it may always proclaim the gospel as ‘good tidings of great joy’…..as a message of liberation and hope for all: we pray:
2 For all who are suffering from depression, or who are grieving the loss of a loved one: (pause) that the Lord may turn their sorrow into joy. that the Lord may be always close to us, in good times and in bad. We pray:
3 That the dreadful happenings in the world around us may not prevent us from rejoicing in the Lord’s coming. We pray:
4 For the lonely, the brokenhearted, and all those who find life burdensome. (pause)May Advent and Christmas bring joy and hope into their lives, we pray:

P Lord our God, you have brought us freedom through Jesus your Son. May we live as free people….. people of great joy.    All this we ask through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Prayer over the Gifts

We present these simple gifts of bread and wine,the fruit of rain and sunshine and the work of our hands.
May the Spirit of your Son help us to welcome one anotherwith the bread we share for mutual nourishmentand the wine of our joy for celebration.We ask this through the same Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Invitation to the Lord’s Prayer

As daughters and sons of God we rejoice in saying / singing:

Deliver us Lord

Deliver us, Lord, from the evil that separates us from you.In your mercy keep us free from sinand protect us from fear and worryas we wait in joyful hopefor the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Peace (based on 2nd Reading)

St Paul says to us:“Rejoice in the Lord always. The Lord is near.”Grant to us, Lord Jesus, the peace which surpasses all understanding,and guard our hearts and mindsas we work for the coming of your kingdom where you live for ever and ever.

Sign of Peace

We possess that peace of God which is so much greater that we can understand.  Let us greet each other in that peace.

Optional Prayer to accompany the Breaking of Bread

P Now let us break the bread of liferemembering the words of Jesus:“See, I am coming soon.” (Rev.27:7)And let us answer:

Invitation to Communion

This is Jesus whose coming fills us with joy. Blessed are we whom he invites to his banquet.

Prayer after CommunionGod, the Sustainer of life,you have refreshed us in this holy meal.Help us    to walk with the weak and the poor,   to give hope to the discouraged,   to lift up, with the gentleness of Jesus,      those who need comfort and care.All this we ask in the name of Jesus the Lord.
