Blessed be the Lord God
who sent John the Baptist to prepare the way for his Son, Jesus.
May the Lord be with you.

Introduction  and  Litany of Praise

John was the one who prepared the way for the coming of Jesus.
And this is what Jesus said about him:

“..  among those born of women no one is greater than John the Baptist.”

He was a fearless, outspoken man…..  and this cost him his life.   (pause)
Let us now praise the One John pointed out as the Lamb of God.

Lord Jesus,
your coming was announced by John the Baptist:

Lord, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, You were baptized by John in the River Jordan:

Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus,
your cousin John was beheaded because of his love for you.

 Lord, have mercy.

Opening Prayer

God of life and love,

we celebrate today with joy

the birth of your prophet, John the Baptist,

who announced and prepared the way for your Son.

Make us heralds, like him,

ready to speak the truth at all times,

willing to lead others to accept Jesus

who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God for ever and ever.   AMEN.

Option B

God of the covenant,

whose promises never fail,

in every age you place your words

on the lips of the prophets

and a thirst for justice in the hearts of your people.

As we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist,

preacher of your word

and herald of the Savior,

help us to respond to his call to conversion.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God for ever and ever.   AMEN.

Liturgy of the Word

                                    GENERAL  INTERCESSIONS

P       Let us pray with joy to God who called John the Baptist to proclaim the coming of the kingdom of Christ.  Full of trust we pray:

CM    Lord, guide us into the way of peace.

            (Please repeat)

1          That, like John the Baptist, our Church Leaders may lead our people to accept Jesus, the Lamb of God and Savior of the world; we pray:

2          That those who serve in government may follow the example of John the Baptist who did not exalt himself but acknowledged his role as an unworthy servant of the Messiah; we pray:

3          That the seniors in our community, imitating Zachariah and Elizabeth, may be witnesses to God’s presence through their perseverance in prayer and their trust in Providence; we pray:

4          That the world may not turn a deaf ear to the voices of the prophets of today who plead for peace and justice for all; we pray:

[The Presider may add a petition that is relevant / local]

P       God, you know us as we are. You have formed and called us even before we were born. Hear the prayers of your people gathered here before you. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Prayer over the Gifts

God of care and compassion,

you gave John the Baptist – the greatest of the prophets –

eyes of faith which helped him recognize Jesus

and point him out as the long-promised Savior.

Help us to recognize him

in these humble signs of bread and wine.

Give us courage so that, like John,

we may be fearless messengers of the truth –

that Jesus is Lord for ever and ever.  AMEN.

Preface                 THE  BIRTH  OF  JOHN  THE  BAPTIST

         (Introductory Dialogue)

All holy God,
we do well to give you thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord.

You set John the Baptist apart from others,
marking him out with special favor.

His birth brought great rejoicing:
even in the womb of Elizabeth he leapt for joy,
so near was our salvation.

You chose him from all the prophets
to prepare the way before your Son,
and to reveal him as the lamb of sacrifice.

He baptized Jesus
in waters made holy by the one who was baptized.

You found John worthy of a martyr’s death,
his last and greatest act of witness to your Son.

In our unending joy we echo on earth
the song of the angels in heaven
as they praise your glory for ever:

Holy, Holy….

If Eucharistic Prayer #2 is used

Lord you are holy indeed.
you are the fountain of all holiness.

We gather here before you,
and, in communion with the whole church,
we celebrate the birthday of John the Baptist,
who prepared the way
for Christ Jesus – the Savior of the world.

And so we pray:

Let your Spirit come upon these gifts …….

Intro to Our Father

Let us now pray to the Father in the words that Jesus taught us.

Deliver Us

Lord, deliver us from every evil,

and grant us peace in our day.

Make your Church attentive to the voice of your Spirit

who speaks through the prophets of today.

Help us to prepare with joy and hope

for the full coming among us

of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Peace

Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles:

“Go and tell John what you hear and see:

      the blind receive their sight,

      the lame walk,

      the deaf hear,

and the poor have good news brought to them.”

Lord Jesus, make us messengers of this Good News

so that we may enjoy the peace of your kingdom

where you live for ever and ever.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

Sign of Peace

As children of God

let us offer one another a sign of reconciliation and peace.

Optional  Prayer to accompany the ‘Breaking of Bread’

May we become as this blessed bread,
a blessed people,
blessed and broken in the love and care of one another.

Lamb of God….

Invitation to Communion

Behold Jesus whom John pointed out as the Lamb of God.

Behold Jesus who takes away the sins of the world.

Blessed are we who are called to the banquet of the Lamb.

     Lord, I am not worthy….

Prayer after Communion

Lord, you have renewed us in this Eucharist,

as we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist.

May the example of his life,

the urgency of his preaching,

and the power of his prayers

make us ready to follow the one he announced,

Jesus, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God for ever and ever. AMEN.

God has chosen you and called you his friends;

may your joy be complete.  AMEN.

You have been baptized in the name of Jesus Christ;

may you inherit everlasting life.   AMEN.

You have received the gift of the Holy Spirit;

may your lives be holy.   AMEN.

Even before we were born we have been called by God.

Go, therefore, and be messengers of God’s love to the world.
