Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus – Year B

Greeting

The grace of Jesus Christ
who for our sake hung upon the cross,
be with you all.

Introduction  and  Litany of Praise

Catholics have had great devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus for over 400 years. This devotion, using the image of the human heart, focuses our attention on the self-sacrificing love of Jesus Christ for humankind.

[It has brought us the First Friday, the Holy Hour, Adoration to the Blessed Sacrament and the Enthronement of the statue of the Sacred Heart in Catholic homes. ]

In today’s Gospel, we are brought to the foot of the Cross where we gaze upon Jesus who has just been crucified.  We have come to be washed in the blood and water that flowed from his side.

Your cross, Lord, is the mark of your fidelity.

Lord, have mercy.

Your cross, Lord, is the pledge of our salvation.

Christ, have mercy.

Your cross, Lord, is the ground of our hope.

Lord, have mercy.

Opening Prayer

A
O God, whose beauty is infinite,
and whose tender compassion never fails,
you sustain your daughters and sons
and open wide your hand to provide for their nourishment.

Fix our eyes on the heart of Christ,
pierced for us on the cross,
and help us to recognize the boundless richness of your love.

We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.   AMEN.

B
Lifted up among us, O God,
is Jesus the crucified;
sign of your steadfast love
and pledge of your will to save.

As we gaze upon the One whom we have pierced,
remind us that we are cleansed in the blood and water
that flowed from his side.
As we bear witness to your love in the world,
reveal to us in those we serve,
sisters and brothers dear to your heart.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God forever and ever.   AMEN.

                                            PRAYERS  OF  THE  FAITHFUL

P       Lifted up on the cross, Christ has become the source of eternal life.  Let us invoke his saving power.

CM      Our response is:       Save us, O Lord.

1       That Church and Civil Leaders may share the humility of Christ so that they may offer their lives in humble service of those entrusted to their care.  We pray:

2       That the Lord may look kindly on the lonely, the abandoned, the sick, and those who suffer in any way, and help them to carry their crosses.  We pray:

3       That we may do the work of Christ in little things, doing humble tasks with generosity and joy.  We pray:

4       That families who are torn apart by dissension, addictions and disregard for others’ emotional needs may be strengthened by the power of the cross of Christ.  We pray:

P       Lord, through the power of the cross may everything we do begin with your inspiration, continue with your help, and reach perfection under your guidance. This we ask in the name of Jesus the Lord.   AMEN.

Prayer over the Gifts

Lord God,
with this bread and wine
we celebrate the saving death of your Son.
May this sacrifice once offered on the cross
to take away the sins of the world
now free us from our sins.
All this we ask through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Preface:

A         Triumph of the Cross    –   P 46  in the SACRAMENTARY

Merciful Father,
it is truly right and just,
always and everywhere to give you thanks.

You decreed that we should be saved
through the wood of the cross.

The tree of our defeat became the tree of victory;
where life was lost,
there life has been restored through Christ our Lord.

Through him the choirs of angels
and all the powers of heaven praise and worship your glory.

May our voices blend with theirs
as we join in their unending hymn of praise:

                             Holy, Holy…

B       Sacred Heart     –       P 45   in the  SACRAMENTARY

Father, every loving and ever living God,
we do always and everywhere to give you thanks
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Lifted high on the cross,
Christ gave his life for us,
so much did he love us.

From his wounded side flowed blood and water,
the fountain of sacramental life in the church.

To his open heart the Savior invites all people,
to draw water in joy from the springs of salvation.

Now, with all the saints and angels
we praise you forever:

           Holy, Holy….

Eucharistic Acclamation

Save us, Savior of the world,
for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free.

Intro to Our Father

Let us pray to God the Father
as we have been taught by Jesus who died to save us all:

Deliver Us

Deliver us, Lord, from every evil
and forgive the sins
which caused your Son’s death on the cross.
Protect us from all anxiety
as we wait in joyful hope
for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Peace

Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles:

“I, when I am lifted up from the earth,
will draw all people to myself”.

Look on the faith of your Church
and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom
where you live forever and ever.

Sign of Peace

Jesus has made our peace by his death on the cross.
Let us now greet each other in that peace.

Invitation to Communion

This is the Lamb of God who humbled himself
and became obedient  to the point of death –
even death on a cross.
Blessed are we to be invited to the Supper of the Lamb.

Prayer after Communion     [based on Gospel  and 2nd Reading]

Heavenly Father,
In the celebration of this Eucharist
we have received the nourishment we need
for our journey through life.

Cleansed in the blood and water
flowing from the side of Christ,
may we have the power to comprehend
how broad and long,
how high and deep,
is his love for us.

To God be the glory in Christ Jesus
for all time forever and ever!  Amen.

Blessing     [Galatians 2.20;  2 Cor. 5.15]

You believe that by his dying
Christ destroyed death forever.

AMEN

You have been crucified with Christ
and live by faith in the Son of God,
who loved you and gave himself up for you.

AMEN

May Jesus send you out to glory in his cross,
and live no longer for yourselves but for him,
who died and was raised to life for us.

AMEN.

And may the blessing of our Merciful God,
Father, + Son and Holy Spirit,
come down upon you today and remain with you forever. AMEN.

Dismissal

Go and carry your cross for the glory of God the Father.
