6th SUNDAY OF EASTER – B

Greeting

‘God is love and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.’

May the love of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Introduction and Litany of Praise

A
Jesus has left us this new commandment,

“Love one another as I have loved you.”

Let us ask forgiveness from God and from one another
for our failure to live this commandment.

I confess….

B
We often speak as if we chose to be Christians.  “Not so”, says Jesus.

“I chose you; more than that, I chose you to be my friends. Now as my friends, you must love one another in the same way that I love you.”

Lord Jesus, as the Father has loved you, so you love us.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, because of love you laid down your life for your friends.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you chose us to bear fruit, fruit that will last.

Lord, have mercy.

Opening Prayer

A
God of all nations;
in the gift of your Son
you have embraced the world
with a love that takes away sin
and bestows perfect joy.

Grant to all who have been reborn in baptism
fidelity in serving you
and generosity in loving one another.

We ask this through Jesus Christ,
the first-born from the dead,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.  AMEN.

B
Faithful God,
you have first loved us
and sent your only Son into the world
so that we might live and love as he did.

Teach us, by your Spirit,
to love one another as Jesus has loved us,
knowing that there can be no greater love
than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

We ask this through the Lord Jesus,
our Passover and our Peace,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.  AMEN.

                                              PRAYERS  OF  THE  FAITHFUL

P         Heavenly Father, your Son set us an example on how to love by laying down his life for us. Help us to follow him so that we may taste the joy that only he can give us. We ask this through the same Christ our Lord.  AMEN.

Prayer over the Gifts

Compassionate Father,
your love appeared with a human face
in your Son Jesus Christ.

You sent him into the world
to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Grant that we might have life through him
who is our Lord for ever and ever.  AMEN.

Intro to the Our Father

Jesus calls us his friends and so with him, we can say:

Deliver Us

Deliver us, Lord,
from loving people or things more than we love you.
Keep us free from everything that would prevent your word
from bearing fruit in our lives,
as we wait in joyful hope
for the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Peace

Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your disciples:

“A new commandment I give you:
love one another, as I have loved you.”

Lord, touch our hearts,
so that we may be able to love,
and experience the peace and joy of your kingdom
where you live for ever and ever.
