5th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – B

Greeting

From God the Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ,
peace and love be with you.  [Eph. 6:23]

Introduction  and  Litany of Praise

Suffering and sickness may be severe. It may even appear to be overwhelming. But Jesus Christ has triumphed over it all.   (pause)

We pray in this Eucharist for Christ’s healing presence in our world and in our hearts today.    (pause)

Lord Jesus, you heal the broken-hearted and bind up all our wounds:

Lord, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, your word gives us hope when we despair:

Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you nourish us for the journey with the gift of yourself:

Lord, have mercy.

Opening Prayer

A
Out of compassion, O God,
you sent your Son into our afflicted world
to proclaim the ‘day of salvation’
when broken hearts would be healed
and broken spirits would be revived.
Through the efforts of us wounded-healers
may that day of salvation be upon us.
We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.  AMEN.

B
With a father’s care and a mother’s compassion,
O good and loving God,
you embraced the sufferings of the whole human family.
In our times of trial and testing,
lift us up and set us free
to serve others in their illness and pain.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.   AMEN.

Prayer over the Gifts

God our Father,
in these signs of bread and wine
we remember your Son Jesus Christ.
Fill us with his Spirit
that we may become weak with the weak,
and become all things to all people.
We ask through Christ our Lord.  AMEN.

Invitation to the Lord’s Prayer

Jesus frequently went off to a lonely place to pray to his heavenly Father.
What kind of prayer did he make?
He said:  “When you pray, pray like this.”

Deliver us Lord

Deliver us, Lord, from discouragement and despair.
Give us the comfort of knowing
that even in moments of hardship and pain
you are with us,
as we wait in joyful hope
for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Peace

Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles:

“I leave you peace; my peace I give you.”

Look not on our sins
but grant that we may be weak with the weak
and become all things to all people,
for the sake of the kingdom,
where you live for ever and ever.

Exchange of Peace

We have all been healed by the love of God.
In gratitude let us share Christ’s peace with those around us.

Optional Prayer to accompany the Breaking of Bread

Heavenly Father,

your Son is the food that nourishes the whole world.

May this bread,

broken that we may deepen our union

with you and our neighbor,

be a sign of your continual presence among us.

Invitation to Communion

This is Jesus who cures the sick and heals the broken-hearted.
Blessed are we who come to him for healing.

Prayer after Communion

God of compassion,
we thank you for Jesus
who gives us strength and hope
in times of sorrow and pain.
May we reach out to one another
and be a source of comfort to all who suffer.
Grant this in the name of Jesus our Lord.  AMEN.

Blessing

May the Lord who heals the broken-hearted protect you.   AMEN.

May the Lord watch over you and keep you in his tender care.   AMEN.

May the power of the Lord strengthen you in his service.   AMEN.

And may the blessings of our loving God,

+  Father, Son and Spirit,

be with you
and abide with you always.  AMEN.
