3rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – B

Sign of the Cross

Greeting

Grace and peace to you
from God our Father and the Lord Jesus.
May the Spirit of New Life be always with you.

Introduction  and  Litany of Praise

A       In recent weeks we have been celebrating the Birth and Childhood of Jesus. The adult Jesus spent around 3 years forming a community of disciples. He calls us also to be his disciples.   (pause)

B       Today, our Church, and each of us gathered in worship, listens to and extends to others the Call and Invitation to discipleship:

A&B  Lord Jesus, you call us to receive the kingdom of heaven through a change of heart:  Lord, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you call us to be wholehearted, committed disciples:

Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you call us to follow you in such a way that the world will see your loveLord, have mercy.

Opening Prayer

Your sovereign rule, O God,
draws near to us
in the person of Jesus your Son.
Your word summons us to faith;
your power transforms our lives.

Free us to follow in Christ’s footsteps,
so that neither human loyalty
nor earthly attachment
may hold us back from answering your call.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.  AMEN.

                                      GENERAL  INTERCESSIONS

P       Simon Peter and Andrew placed all their confidence in Jesus when they left everything to follow him.  We ask for that same confidence and trust as we pray:

CM      Lord, renew our hearts.

Please repeat:

  1. For those who “left their nets” to follow Jesus: that, through their committed lives, others may be inspired to follow:  We pray:
  2. May more young people from our Parish be open to the call of the Lord to “be fishers of other people” and serve him in the building up of the Kingdom. We pray:
  3. That we, who worship, will invite others to join our worship so that our Parish may be recognized as a Worshipping Community.  We pray:
  4. That we, who serve as volunteers, may welcome others to serve in the different ministries in our Parish.  We pray:

[The Presider may add a Petition that is local / relevant]

P       Give us, O Lord, the gift of a strong faith so that like Simon Peter and Andrew, we may respond to your call with generosity, with honesty, and with courage. This we as through Christ our Lord.  AMEN.

Prayer over the Gifts

Sovereign Lord,
with these gifts of bread and wine
we bring before you our good intentions –
our desire to please you in all we do.
Give us the strength to answer the call
of Jesus Christ our Lord.  AMEN.

Invitation to the Lord’s Prayer

The Lord never fails to bless the generous giver.
We pray now that we, too, may share our daily bread
with those who have none, as we say together:

Deliver us Lord

Deliver us, Lord,
from everything that keeps us from following you.
Help us to break the chains of sin
so that we can become free
to serve you and your kingdom
as we prepare for the final coming among us
of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Peace

Lord Jesus Christ you said to your apostles:

“Follow me and I will make you fishers of people.”

Look not on our sins,
but on the faith of your Church.
And grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom
where you live for ever and ever.

Exchange of Peace

Let us now extend the hand of friendship and peace.

Optional Prayer to accompany the Breaking of Bread

When we break this bread and share this wine
we declare that we regard all people
as our brothers and sisters.
With God as our Father
we are members of one family.

Invitation to Communion

This is Jesus who gathers people
from east and west,
from north and south,
to join him in the banquet prepared for those who love him.
Blessed are we who have been invited to the Supper of the Lamb.

Prayer after Communion

Lord God of the nations,
today your Son has spoken to us
and has called us to be his disciples.
By the strength of the food he has given us
may we have the courage to follow him
on the road which leads to you.
All this we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.  AMEN.

Blessing   (adapted from St. Anselm)

 A
May the God of all tenderness and mercy
make you cleave to him without parting,
worship him without wearying,
serve him without failing,
now and forever.     AMEN.

B
May the Father reveal his will to you.      AMEN.

May the Son accompany you on every step of your journey.   AMEN.

May the Holy Spirit keep your hearts alive with love.  AMEN.

Dismissal

God’s kingdom is at work in our midst.
