The Transfiguration of the Lord

August 6 – This Feast takes the place of the 18th Sunday in O.T. in the Year 2017

Greeting

Glory be to God the Father
who reveals to us Jesus his Son.
May you listen to him
and may his favor be always with you.

Introduction  and  Litany of Praise

A       On Mount Tabor, Jesus’ disciples got a glimpse of the glory that was his as the Son of God.  It was such a wonderful experience for them that Peter exclaimed, ‘Lord, it is good for us to be here.’

And it is good for us to be here this (morning / evening) because we too get a glimpse of the glory prepared for us, for we too are beloved children of God.  [Pause]

B       ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!”
These words addressed to the apostles are now addressed to us.
Today we are asked to look at Jesus and listen to what he says to us.
Let us ask him to forgive our sins and free us from anything that
hinders our hearing the Gospel.  [Pause]

C       On this day in the year 1945, an Atom bomb destroyed the city of Hiroshima. The blinding light and fireball claimed the lives of around one hundred and forty thousand people.

Every August 6, the Church commemorates the occasion where Jesus was transfigured on Mount Tabor. The light of Christ illumined the lives of the 3 apostles who were present.  Light can kill….  or give life!

ABC    We pray to you, God of Abraham, Elijah and Moses.

   Lord, have mercy.

We pray to you, God of all Christians.

   Christ, have mercy.

We pray to you, God of all peoples.

   Lord, have mercy.

Opening Prayer

A
Upon a high mountain,
O God of majestic glory,
you revealed Jesus in the mystery of his transfiguration
as your Son, the Beloved,
to whom we must listen.

By the word of his gospel,
shining for ever as a light in the darkness,
give us hope in the midst of suffering
and faith to perceive, even in the passion and cross,
the glory of the risen Christ,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.  AMEN.

B
God and Father of Jesus,
you transfigured your Chosen One
and in heavenly light
revealed him as your Son.

Open our ears to the living Word
and our eyes to his glorious presence,
that we may be strengthened
in time of fear and uncertainty,
and one day share your glory.

Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.  AMEN.

                             GENERAL   INTERCESSIONS

P       Let us bring our petitions before the throne of the Holy One, presenting them through Christ the Beloved Son.

CM      Let our response be:  Lord, transform us in your love.

Please repeat:

  1. For a world terrified by the memory of the atomic bomb(pause) May the blinding light of destruction always yield to the transforming light of peace. We pray:
  2. For nations still shrouded by conflict and war.  (pause) May they have a change of heart so that mercy will conquer hatred and vengeance make way for forgiveness. We pray:
  3. That the radiant face of Christ may shine on all exiles and refugees and be a sign of encouragement to them in their misery, we pray:

[The Presider may add a petition that is local / relevant]

P       God of majesty, help us to listen to your Beloved – in whose name we pray – that we may be sustained by your words of everlasting life.  AMEN.

Prayer over the Gifts

Lord, look upon the face of Christ your Son,
who gave himself up as a ransom for all.
As this bread and wine are changed
and become the food and drink of eternal life
may we become to those around us
bread of strength and wine of joy;
and may we reveal to them the face of Christ  –
our Lord for ever and ever. AMEN.

[Please note that there is a special Preface – P13 in Old Sacramentary –  for today’s Celebration.]

Invitation to the Lord’s Prayer

On Mount Tabor, the Father said to Jesus:

“This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him”.

We are God’s beloved sons and daughters and so we can pray:

Deliver us Lord

Deliver us, Lord, from every evil,
and from the fear of changing.
Set us free from our past
so that we may go forward with courage
and prepare in joyful hope
for the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, Jesus Christ,
you said to your apostles on the holy mountain:

‘Rise, and do not be afraid.’

Look not on our sins,
but on the faith of your Church,
and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom,
where you live for ever and ever.

Sign of Peace

Jesus has made our peace by his death on the cross.
Let us now greet each other in that peace.

Invitation to Communion

This is Jesus, God’s Beloved Son.
It is good for us to be here to receive him.

Prayer after Communion

Eternal Father,
you have brightened our lives today;
you have given us a glimpse into the life of Christ.
In times of darkness may we learn to listen to his voice,
and without fear,
commit ourselves to brighten the lives of the people around us.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.  AMEN.

Blessing

May God the Father continue to call you his beloved.

AMEN.

May you always be ready to listen to the voice of God the Son.

May the Holy Spirit shower blessings upon you.

AMEN.

And may the blessings of our God,

+  Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

come down upon us today and remain with us for ever.  AMEN.
